4 Reasons To Never Drive A Car With A Flat Tire

If your car has a flat tire, it can be tempting to try to drive it to a service station to have the tire patched or replaced. But even if the service station is only a short distance, this can still be dangerous. It's never recommended that you drive with a flat tire but, instead, call to have your car towed or have the tow truck driver put your spare tire on for you. Consider some very good reasons for this.

1. You cannot brake with a flat tire

The air in your tire is what allows the rotors to grip the tire and cause it to stop. When the tire is flat, the rotors have nothing to grab and, instead, you may simply slide and skid when you try to apply the brakes. This can be very serious when on the road, especially if you need to make a sudden stop. So for your own safety and the safety of others, you don't want to drive even a short distance with a flat.

2. You cannot steer with a flat tire

The air in a tire is what allows you to steer the car. When a tire is flat, it simply drags on the ground and cannot be turned. You may not be able to even change lanes much less turn a corner when you have a flat, and you will not be able to react if someone were to cut you off in traffic. This too makes your car very dangerous.

3. Tires protect your car from damage

Every time your car hits a pot hole or other bump, the air in the tires helps to absorb much of that shock. Four properly inflated tires also keeps your car level when on the road. When you have a flat tire, you can more easily bend a rim or break an axle when you hit a bump, simply because there is no cushioning of your car and because the weight of your car is being distributed unevenly. These repairs are typically much more expensive than the cost of a tow truck service.

4. Driving on a flat tire can damage it more severely

In some cases, a flat tire may simply need to be patched and it can be re-inflated. However, driving on a flat usually does much more damage to the tire so that it become shredded and unusable. You would then need to pay for a new tire to replace the old one. Too often this is much more expensive than calling a tow truck company, like Arctic Thunder Towing & Recovery, to take your car to a repair shop.
