Shop Smart for Your New Car

Make Money With Your Old Junk Car

If you have an old junk car sitting at your house, you have many options on how to get rid of it. You can sell the car to an individual, sell it to a salvage yard, or sell only the parts.

Sell It to Individuals

There are likely people in your area that would like to purchase your junk car. Some people may like to use it as a project to restore it and get the car running again. Some people like to drive in demolition derbies, and are always looking for junk cars to drive. Advertise your car in your local newspaper, online, etc., and you may be surprised how quickly you sell it.

Sell It to a Salvage Yard

Contact a salvage yard in your area and ask if they will purchase your junked car. How much they will pay you for the car depends on if it is operable, if any parts on the car are damaged, and more. Some salvage yards require that you remove the tires and other non-metal materials before you bring them the car. If it is not drivable, some salvage yards will come to you to pick up the car and pay you on the spot.

The salvage yard may ask to see your title and registration before they purchase the vehicle. If you do not have this, you can contact your local DMV office to see if you can obtain these documents. Before you sell your junked car, make sure you shop around at different salvage yards first so you can get the most money from it.

Sell the Parts

Just because your car is junked does not mean there are no working parts. It may have a good alternator, engine, thermostat, and more, that used car part dealers will gladly purchase from you. In most cases, they will take the parts out of the car for you. Contact your mechanic, or another mechanic in your area, who should be able to help you find where you can sell the parts.

There are also pull and pick places that will purchase your junked car. They then place the car on their lot, and people can pull parts from it to repair their own cars.

For more information, start contacting local businesses like Ingram Auto Sales Inc to see what they will offer you for your car or for parts. Look for the company with the best estimate on your car's value and for the company that will make the pick or drop of as easy for you as possible.
