3 Reasons Why Your Brakes Are Squealing

When you push down on the brake pedal, you expect your vehicle to stop. What you don't expect is to hear a loud squealing sound, especially if you recently had your brakes replaced. Since your brakes are an important part of your vehicle and your safety, you want to make sure they are working properly at all times. Here are a few of the reasons why your brakes might be squealing.

The brake pads are worn.

Brake pads have a steel back and friction material that is attached to them. When you push down on the brake pedal, a certain amount of pressure is produced causing the pads to clamp onto the rotors and help your vehicle stop. The friction between the rotors and the pads is what helps your vehicle slow down and come to a stop. If there isn't enough of that friction material left on your pads, you need to get them changed. Some of the pads today have a wear indicator that lets you know your brakes need servicing by activating the spring clip on the pads and emitting a squealing sound.

The rotor surface isn't cut right.

Whenever your brakes are replaced, your rotors have to be resurfaced to get them back to their true form and remove the glazing. All of the imperfections are removed on the surface of the rotor. Then, a finish is applied to make sure the pads are broken in properly. This makes sure your pads aren't going to shift and move when braking. When the pads ride up, it causes them to click. If you had your brake pads replaced and the rotors weren't resurfaced, braking can cause them to squeal, and the pedal can pulsate.

Your caliper mounts are worn and need to be replaced.

If there is too much play between the bushings and the caliper mounts, you could end up with a loud squealing noise. Once the calipers are past a certain point, you have no choice but to replace them to make sure everything is held securely in place. Bad bushings and mounts allow the parts to shift and move and create added friction between the key components needed to make your vehicle stop.

With so many different components in your braking system, you need to get everything checked out to ensure everything is in proper working order and you aren't putting your safety on the line. Visit Eagle Automotive & Wrecker Service if you need brake repairs.
